Sesame Street ReAction Figures Wave 5: What Collectors Should Know Before Buying

Quick Answer

Sesame Street ReAction Figures Wave 5 brings retro-styled vinyl figures of beloved characters, but before you buy, consider the packaging, articulation, and how they fit your display. If you value nostalgic packaging and classic character designs, these are a solid choice; if you prefer modern articulation or larger scale, look elsewhere.

Sesame Street ReAction Figures Wave 5 continues the retro-inspired line that celebrates the classic Muppet characters. These figures are designed to evoke the look and feel of action figures from the 1970s and 1980s, with simple sculpts and vintage-style cardback packaging. For collectors, the appeal lies in their nostalgic charm and the opportunity to own iconic characters in a style that pays homage to the past.

Before you start adding these to your cart, it's important to understand what makes ReAction figures unique: their limited articulation, scale, and packaging. This guide will walk you through the key considerations, including how they compare to other collectible figures and what to expect in terms of quality and display options.

What Are ReAction Figures?

ReAction figures are a line of retro-styled vinyl figures produced by Super7, known for their tribute to the action figures of the late 1970s and early 1980s. They typically feature five points of articulation (head, arms, and legs) and come in classic blister card packaging that mimics the vintage aesthetic. The Sesame Street line includes beloved characters like Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, and more, each rendered with a stylized look that captures the essence of the original Muppet designs.

Wave 5 of the Sesame Street ReAction figures introduces new characters to the lineup, including Abby Cadabby, a popular fairy-in-training character. Each figure is designed to appeal to both nostalgic adults who grew up with the show and younger collectors who appreciate the retro style. However, the limited articulation means these are more for display than for active play.

• Check the packaging: ReAction figures often come in window boxes that show the figure, but some variants may have different card designs.
• Consider the scale: Most ReAction figures are 3.75 inches tall, which may differ from other lines you collect.

Packaging and Presentation: What to Expect

One of the biggest draws of ReAction figures is their packaging. The cardback artwork is often vibrant and features character-specific illustrations, making them great for mint-in-box collectors. The blister is clear, allowing you to inspect the figure for paint flaws or defects before purchasing. If you're an in-box collector, the packaging is a significant factor in your buying decision, as it can affect the value and display appeal.

However, the packaging can also be a drawback for those who prefer to open their figures. The card is not resealable, so if you open the figure, you'll likely damage the packaging. This is a trade-off to consider: if you like to display your figures out of the box, you might want to keep the packaging for storage or resale, but it won't be in mint condition afterward.

Articulation and Quality: What to Expect

ReAction figures are known for their limited articulation, typically five points. This means the figures can stand and have basic poseability, but they won't be able to perform dynamic action poses. For collectors who primarily display figures in static poses, this is usually acceptable. The sculpts are designed to capture the characters' personalities, and the paint applications are generally clean, though occasional imperfections can occur.

The vinyl material is durable and suitable for occasional handling, but these figures are not designed for rough play. If you're buying for a child, consider whether the limited articulation and smaller size will meet their expectations. For adult collectors, the quality is generally good, but it's worth inspecting the figure in person if possible, or buying from a retailer with a good return policy.

How Do They Compare to Other Collectibles?

When deciding whether to invest in Sesame Street ReAction Figures, it's helpful to compare them to other collectible lines you might be considering. For example, Funko Pop! figures offer a different aesthetic with oversized heads and no articulation, while blind box figures like Tokidoki Lucky Cats provide a surprise element and smaller scale. ReAction figures sit somewhere in between, offering a nostalgic nod to classic action figures with a recognizable character license.

If you're a fan of vinyl figures for collectors, you might also look at designer toys like BE@RBRICK, which offer a more modern and abstract take on collectible figures. However, the price point and scale are quite different, so it's important to define what you're looking for: nostalgia, display value, or investment potential.

Decision Rules for Buying ReAction Figures

• If you're a mint-in-box collector: Look for figures with pristine packaging and consider buying two if you want to display one out of the box and keep one sealed. Check for any creases or damage before purchase.
• If you prefer to open and pose figures: Accept that the packaging will be damaged, and focus on the figure's sculpt and paint quality. Inspect the figure for any defects before opening.
• If you're buying for a child: Consider the limited articulation and smaller size; these may not be ideal for active play. Look for more durable, poseable alternatives if play is the priority.
